Chill Champagne In Style

globalightIf you don’t have someplace beautiful to store and chill your Veuve Clicquot champagne, you’re just throwing good money away, because after the champagne is gone, then what? Is that all there is? Designer Karim Rashid has stepped up to the plate and answered the question with the Veuve Clicquot Globalight champagne cooler and carrier. For good measure, the Globalight also lights the champagne to make it more beautiful. The Globalight chills exactly one bouteille at a time, but it looks ravishing while doing it. Since you were wondering, the Globalight will get you for a chilled and sexy USD$4,000. And the Veuve Clicquot champagne (not included) might run anywhere between $40 and $300 per bottle, depending upon your tastes. I should also mention that if you want one of these, you’ll need to move because there are only 500 worldwide.

To Catch A Thief

policewoman.jpgAbsolute Software makes a laptop tracking solution that is integrated into the device at the time of manufacturing, which enables a laptop to be located whenever it attaches to the Internet. To date, the solution has recovered about 5,000 stolen laptops.

Digital Trends News reports that the West Midlands Police department have used the gadgetry to trace more than 30 stolen laptops that ended up in far-flung places like Saudi Arabia and Argentina.

The tracking function is activated each time the laptop connects to the Internet. A monitoring center records the last used IP address. The police provide the IP address to the local ISP and that usually leads to the ‘napped notebook.

The real value of the device is not in finding an individual’s purloined ‘puter, but instead, police have determined that lifted laptops often keep company with other stolen stuff. Tracking a stolen laptop often uncovers additional illegal activity.

Rumours Swirl About 3G iPhone

iphoneRumours are swirling about the possibility of a new 3G iPhone on the horizon. According to recent speculation, shortages of the iPhone on Apple’s Web site are a sure sign that the Apocalypse is near 3G iPhone is ready for production.

The new 3G iPhone is slightly thinner than the first generation model, but will allegedly retain its 8GB and 16GB memory configurations, along with its current price tag. Apple will upgrade the finish on the 3G model, since apparently the the current model doesn’t look cool enough. (But, oh what a cool phone it was for the few months you owned it - or it owned you - before the redesign.) After the new one comes out - in June or next year, depending upon who you believe - just don’t show your old model off too much. Perhaps people will think it’s a Touch.

We’re sure to find out more about Apple’s plans at the WWDC or sooner, judging by Apple’s recent denials. If Apple is even to be trusted anymore, the WWDC will allegedly spring to life June 9-13, 2008 in the City By The Bay.

Microsoft Breaks Out The Colours For Its Wireless Mouse

MS Mouse pomegranateMicrosoft has added a touch of colour to its best-selling wireless mouse line. Users can now find the mice in dark pink, red, brown, green and khaki - or dragon fruit, pomegranate, milk chocolate, aloe and creme brulee, for the marketing-savvy in the crowd.

Brown. There’s that colour again. It must have been the outstanding sales of the brown Zune that convinced MS that brown is a good product colour. (Maybe they just got a huge price break on brown.)

The coloured versions of the Notebook Optical Mouse 3000 are operationally identical to the stodgy, corporate versions currently on the shelves. The battery has an expected 6-month life. Most of the new additions will be available in May, except for creme brulee - which won’t be forthcoming until June. I guess Microsoft is expecting such a rush on the brown mice that they wanted to hold off on the khaki coloured ones until the brown rush dies back a bit.

USD $30 if you’re serious… or even if you’re not.

LG’s Got A Secret

lgblacklabel.jpg
There’s nothing more fun than a little mystery and LG apparently wants the world to know that it has a secret. The company will issue the third LG Black Label handset April 24. The company plans to start the rollout in Europe and move out from there.

The Black Label Series includes the LG Chocolate and the LG Shine, so expect something really good looking. Also expect some smartphone technology and a super-slim 5-megapixel camera. LG is pushing this one as “Style that Lasts” which, according to the company, translates into a handset with a tempered glass surface and a carbon-fiber body.

No additional info is available, but LG did supply a little postage stamp to look at. Sorry, kids. It doesn’t get any bigger than this. (Literally!)

Pimp My iPhone

DiamondiPhone.jpg
I was wrong. Thomas Heyerdahl doesn’t have the concession on diamond-encrusted Apple products. Peter Aloisson, an Austrian jeweller, was contracted by an unnamed Russian businessman to produce a diamond-coated, 18K white gold iPhone. The phone features 318 diamonds, 138 of which are of the princess cut variety. The finished iPhone has a carat weight somewhere between 16.5 and 17.75 and set someone back €120,000. Before you ask: no, that’s not the cost of the data plan. Unlike the exclusive Mr. Heyerdahl, Mr. Aloisson will pimp an iPhone for just about anyone who’s carrying 120-large euros.
